Unfortunately, the consensus wisdom is that responding lets them know you are alive, and rather then take you off, they continue, and possible spread your name to other sites, etc.
I've found best bet is simply to block mail from that address via your email program, and ignore it.
All in all, a shame really. I'm trying to be real good, and then my wife goes and reads the mail...

: So I spend a little time on the message board last night .... then I get a junk spam from this [email protected] person for some adult web site. From the looks of his mailing list, quite a few of you guys also got the same thing.
: I've no desire to get this kind of mail, and have sent him a message saying so. I'm posting this with the hope that the admin guys on this list will take note and do whatever it is they can to prevent people from taking addresses from this list to spam.
