replace timing gear? (archive)

Since I have a leaky gasket under the upper front (timing?) engine cover, I thought I'd replace the timing chain and do a few other things there as well. Should I replace the gear as well? My gear experience is limited to bicycles and when I replaced a chain I also replaced the front and rear sprockets.
