The previous owner of my '72 2002 figured out the secret for replacement keys: use a Volkswagen blank.

Just walk into your local run-of-the-mill key cutter and ask to have your key copied onto a VW blank. The guy will look at you kinda funny and then go looking on his giant key wall. He should come back with a sorta retro-looking key that's similar to your BMW key, but has "Für Volkswagen" stamped on it.

I know it sounds a bit sketchy, but I've had dupes made at a couple of different places and they've always worked perfectly. Unless you're a total stickler for originality, it's an excellent alternative. Give it a try.
