Headlight wiring question (archive)

I am in the process of tracking down electrical gremlins in my 73 02. One of the wires in the headlight switch gets REALLY hot, it is white and yellow and goes to the headlight relay, at least according to the manual, which I am not sure what year it is for. Is this normal? I have also read about the need to upgrade the wiring and use relays for using H4s. I believe it is recommended for 73, is that the case? I am planning this upgrade, if needed.

Any suggestions on wire size or relay types? I have looked at the Mercedes page, found it from one of Milton's posts.
