I'm guessing by your posting that you are on the young side, perhaps a teenager. Owning a '02 really is like owning any type of car. However, as simple and reliable as an '02 appears to be, it still requires regular maintance.

Being mechanically minded does help, but that doesn't make you a car mechanic in my book. Anybody can tear apart a car, but putting it back together and in running condition is another story. If you haven't worked on cars before in your life, you need to find yourself a good '02 mechanic to help you along until you learn enough to fix the car yourself.

Scroll through all of various postings on the '02 Messageboard and the '02 Digest if you're a subscriber. Both are full of postings from people who are having some sort of problem with their '02s. These cars are loads of fun to own and drive, but can be frustrating to repair at times. Everyone has their horror stories and well as their high points.

If you like a good running history of someone who has recently bought a '02, go back about 1/2 year and check out all of the posting by Corey. His presistance and energy at getting his '02 up and running to his satisfaction never ceases to amazes me.

So, if you got the patience, $$, and a nice warm garage, I'd say buy a '02. You'll never regret it. As to getting your father to say "yes", that another story.
