: In a town about 30 miles away there is a sweet little 71' 2002. I talked to the owner who said he would reluctantly give it up for $3,000. It is a light orange color with a new paint job. The guy owns a body shop so it is pretty nice. My concern is that my dad won't like it. He hates old cars because he doesn't like to get his hands dirty. I have a friend with a 76' 02 that runs great, but my dad thinks it will have a lot of problems even though I told him 02 engines are practically bullet proof. How do I convince him that I know enough about working on this type of car to own one? I'm very mechanically minded and enjoy getting my hands dirty. I also know about a 02 parts magazine. I'm done convincing myself, how do I convince him?

I would second what everyone else has said. Also, there are several web sites that talk about what else to look for (e.g., before buying an 02). i did much of what is commonly done (checked rockers, etc.), and i'm still finding that CV joints, differential mount, and other such things need to be replaced. You really need to take the car to someone who knows them well, have them look over it, put it on a lift, take off the tires and look up the shock towers, etc.
