I bought a car with this sound once...- and I just figured the trans or clutch would crap out in a few days - but it was just the push rod to the release lever had NO lubrication on it - hence the "click / creak" noise!

This is easy to see under car - it's a domed push rod that engages a cup indent in the lever that goes into the bell housing of the trans.

swipe some good heavy bearing grease - and see if the sound goes away.
