So I had the car looked over last week, specifically asked that wheel bearings be looked over. I even offered to order new bearings before the car went into the shop. Wrench said nope, I've got em if i need em.

Gave the car a clean bill of health on friday, and it ran extremely well. Today I left Charleston at 7pm and made the I-26 run to Asheville, solo. Wife had gone up the day before.

About halfway there I called on the cell phone, made small talk and the mistake of mentioning how well the car was running. About 2 minutes after that I started to hear a high-pitched whistling noise.

Couldn't localize it, seemed fainter with the window down, didn't really seem to be coming from the engine bay. Almost seemed to be coming from inside the cabin. Very intermittent, and changes at times to a more howling noise that seems to come from somewhere slightly different and which is more definitely modulated by speed/rpm. I was unable to determine if its a rpm or a wheel speed thing. No noise in neutral yet, though.

Also perhaps (all this so intermittent and variable that its hard to nail down) a third, different whining noise upon deceleration to stop.

I pulled over, looked under the hood, checked engine fluids, verified all belts were turning, etc. No identifiable problems. No overheating.

Went on my way, got here fine, but it continued to intermittently do this for the final hour of the trip.

Other pertinent info: Its cold. First time the car has seen sub-freezing temps since I've owned it. Heater doesn't seem to be blowing warm air, but this noise started after I turned the heater on for the 1st time. However, it did continue after I turned the heater off.

What should I suspect? Sounds kinda like a bearing somewhere to me. Wheels? Pilot/throwout? (i did an engine swap including a clutch replacement not 6 months ago) Tranny? Guibo? Driveshaft? Differential?

Not sure how recently tranny/diff fluids have been changed, I asked that it be done about 3 months ago but looking over my reciepts I dont have any note that it was done.

Argh. I can feel my christmas bonus evaporating, and I had it mentally spent on goodies already.

Replies/ideas to the board, I'm not where I can check my email for the next few days.

Please, make it stop...
