I remember reading about how to convert to a 5-lug pattern in an '02 digest archive from pre '97. If you can find it, I think whoever did it was sucessful. Also, I went to school with Eric Frank (co-wrote most of the '02 FAQ on bimmers.com), though his '02 was very modified, I think he had converted to 5-lug when he fabbed his disk brake set-up. At one point he had pictures and specs on his web page. The web page doesn't exist, but you might find someone who has the pics and description.
