Haynes manual says to use the vac port on the intake manifold, but who kows if this is the correct way for all cars. I would set timing at TDC with the vac adv/ret unit disconnected and make sure you are getting all of the 32? degrees of mechanical advance that your supposed to. Then attatch a vac pump to the vac adv/ret unit and see if it's doing it's thing. My vac adv unit advances about 5 or 6 degrees. I don't know exactly how much the vac ret unit does.
