: Most people recommend that you leave this job up to a professional. If you're game to tackle the job yourself, you will need to have both windshields and rear side windows (gaskets too) out. I hope you haven't loss the original headliner, that's your template. There is no info in the factory manual on this.
: I vaguely rememeber seeing posting on this message board and the original '02 Digest. Check those for more info.
Dwight is right.
I have done a headliner in a sunroof 2002. First ALL windows must be out of the car. Get yourself alot of little spring clips AND some contact cement. BMW used to sell contact cement for the 2002 door seals that works well.(non softening under heat --you really don't want your headliner sagging the first hot day?) First install the metal top bows to help position the headliner. Then start at the back window and work your way forward, carefully positioning the headliner and cliping it to the bodywork with all those little clips. Once you have it close to looking right. Start using the contact adhesive to make it permanant. If you have a sunroof --this makes it much harder as you will need to stretch the headliner around and into the opening without causing any wrinkles! Not easy! It's also fun replacing the sunroof panel covering as well.
So it you haven't started this project yet. And don't want to ruin that nice new headliner --see if you can find a pro to do it. Even if he charges $200+ for the work it will be worth it.

I spent 2 days doing mine. And now after 7 years it is water stained around the rear window already!
