I bought an 02 in my last 2 years of college BECAUSE it was old and simple. Being a 4 cyl., rear wheel drive and carbureted, it was easy to work on and parts were no more expensive than for any other car. The key is to start with a mechanically sound vehicle and find decent part suppliers. If you are at home now and can manage it, buy a good shell with decent tranny, diff. and wiring. If the engine is blown that is o.k. You can get the car cheap and put in a 320i block with a rebuilt 02 head. It'll take time, money and dedication over the summer but you will have a solid running car and you will have enough mechanical experience to fix ANYTHING that could give you a problem in the future. In 4 years I have only been without my car for 3 days when I had to replace the u-joints in my driveshaft. Every other time it has been a 1-day thing to fix whatever was wrong. Bottom line. If you are a capable mechanic and get the car put together well over the summer, you would be hard pressed to find a better college vehicle. If you are not a mechanic, then save as much as you can and get a late 80's japanese car. They can usually be found in pretty good shape and are plentiful.
: I'm thinking about buying a 1972 2002 w/ duel 40s. Im going to be heading off to college next year.Do '02's require too much attention for a diligent student?... I know you guys are'02 nuts but please be realistic.
: Thanks.
