'75 2002 emission control question (archive)

I just bought a '75 2002 which has an air pump that is not currently hooked up, and a lot of the emision control tubing is rusted, corroded, broken, etc. Can I remove all of this and cap everything off at their origins? What would be the results of this? I am also having a problem with the car "lunging" when I have it in Drive and I have the breaks applied.. any ideas?
