Automatics aren't as fun or as quick as stick shifts but as far as looks and handling it would be a great first car. I learned how to drive on a 1966 Volvo 122 4 speed. It depends on what you are comfortable with I suppose. I vote for teaching her to drive the stick, its always handy to know how to drive one.
