safest way
1. remove cam cover at tdc the lobes on one will off of the valves.
2. remove the spark plug for 1 . with soft wire feel for piston . small L shape is helpful on the wire. ( if you are young there is thread on cranking the motor an letting the air blow your finger off of the spark plug hole. Or you might hav good eyes and be able to see the piston with a lightn source.) I use the above sniff and feel
