Hey Dave, Dave here;
I bought my ride from Dave Burke and Matt Kruhm in Maryland. It came pre set with the Mik sidedrafts. I love 'em. Those gents sold me the car with a Weber too, but I am glad I kept the Miks on there. Mine are hard to start (starter disks i.e. 'the choke' not hooked up yet) but at operating temperature they are cherry.
Go to the bimmers.com go fast section for a very apt description of these carbs. Set and forget is pretty true. I have not had to synchronize them or anything. You may want to get a manometer called a UniSyn to synchronize the carbs if you are setting them up. Also, you may want to buy a bunch of jets and play around with the power of different set ups. Jetting a mikuni may be done with cigarette dangling from mouth (but I don't recommend it).
The board's archives say high compression pistons and big duration cam good sidedrafts. I only know my ride which does have that stuff. Gas and go!!!

Rain in Pittsburgh now.
Make salt go away though.
