The valve problem is usually the other way around. If the valces don't hit then it is fine, although the compression will be a bit different.

: I've just bought an engine which was said to be reconditioned and took the head off to see what's been done to it. It's an E12 1974 head on a 1973 block. It has 1mm oversize pistons, but they seem to be of the 'bathtub' type rather than the 'grand piano' that I expected. Mike Macartney's book says you can't put bathtub pistons with an E12 head (presumably because the valves will hit the pistons), but before removing the head, the engine turned well enough with no apparent hitting of valves on pistons. Can anyone tell me if this is likely to run ok once it's back together?
