: I know most of you recommend that a professional do the job but I'm bullheaded and decided to attempt it myself. I already have the windshield and gasket removed, but I was wondering if there is an easy way to remove all the crud left behind from the gasket. Also is it necessary to glue the new gasket in or apply glue where the glass seats? It seems logical, but I thought I'd make sure. What kind of glue would I use? Are the odds of doing this myself likely to result in a windshield that yet again leaks? Any experiences of doing it yourself with good results? Thanks for the help. -Jenny

Getting the old stuff off is a pain but we were repainting so one could use a wire brush.
As for putting it in again. The retired bodyman that lived down the road and helped with the paint job turned up with a tube of Simple green to lubricate and no sealant. The whole thing went in really easily and cleaned up with water. no leaks. Used simple green for the locking strip as well and I used generic North American locking strip (black and cheap) It is a fraction larger but fits and looks fine. I did not have a spreading tool but used a wire clothes hanger - made a small/larger figure eight with an offset angle. Make the small part of the eight just big enough to pass the lock strip and still fit the groove. Then when you squeeze the larger loop of the eight it opens up the smaller one a fraction and allows you to open up the groove and thread the locking strip at the same time. You will probably use up a few hangers before the size is perfect. Have fun.
