Bart-Don't you have anything better to do than compare apples to oranges? The Corvette is a 2-seat SPORTS CAR. Have you posted similar messages on Ferrari or Viper or 300ZX boards? By the way it wasn't the Corvette that defeated Ferrari in '60's, it was the Cobra, Daytona Coupe, and GT-40 by Ford. And the newest Corvette just got beat at the 24 Hours of Daytona by the Viper, a design that's about a decade old! None of these cars have more than two seats, which is the primary fault of your comparison, isn't it? Try going fast in a Corvette with 3 more people in the back, especially over a bumpy road. But speed isn't everything; otherwise we'd all be driving riceburners that do 10-sec 1/4 miles. At least the 'Vette would handle better because of the improved weight balance, a problem the 2002 almost never has.
Surely you can't compare the new Corvettes to the older ones. The newer ones are faster, but do you think they have as much charisma as a split-window Sting Ray or Grand Sport? No way. Nor do the new BMWs, which look (and feel) more and more like bloated Civics. And like Civics, they're EVERYWHERE. Just look at the intricate 3-piece grill-work of a pre-'74 2002 to see what I'm talking about. Or the almost delicate airy greenhouse which affords an unequaled view or your surroundings. This is where the 2002 excels above and beyond the Corvette, its ability to live up to its purpose as a sporty touring car, not a 2-seat speed demon. And these design characteristics, which may owe some thanks to the Italians, may never be seen again, thanks to government regulations, good or bad.
The 2002, like all old Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Z-cars, 911s, etc. have evolved into modern incarnations which embody their ancestor's best qualities, if not their names. The '02 is not made now, yet it is still evident (in spirit) in every new 3-Series. Instead of putting down drivers of these other older cars, Bart, you should be glad that not everyone drives a brand new (or is that bland new?) Civic or Corolla or 3-Series that look as though they came off the same mass-assembly plant. You ought to be thankful that there is as much diversity in cars as there is in car owners around here, lest you think Eastern Europe is an ideal place to live and commute.
P.S. Bond doesn't drive a BMW because it's a good car. He drives it because it's fashionable, and because BMW can pony up the dough to use the Bond films as a marketing tool. The Z-8 has nothing on a V-12 DB-7 Vantage. Bond should stick with Aston Martin.
