Can y'all point me where to look for net help, or mebbe help me out...

Kid brother's carb'ed 83 toy sr5 truck is down, we recently swapped out an alternator, he didn't get the new regulator.

The other day he drove it someplace to deliver some furniture, left the lights on, came back out it was dead. I jumped him, and it was running really rough, but we made it home.

Now after sitting a few days before we could get to it, it wont start, even after charging, replacing plugs etc. It sorta freewheels when you crank it, doesn't seem to be getting any compression/ignition at all.

Took the valve cover off to see what the valve train was doing, it all looks good when you crank, and I did notice spark, but it doesn't seem to catch/offer any resistance at all when cranking.

He's confessed to some tinkering with the mixture setting on his carb but I dunno if that would have gotten us where we are.

Any ideas? Gonna prolly take it to a wrench tomorrow but would like some idea of what to expect.
