spark plug wire connectors cracked upon removal (archive)

today, i decided to check on the condition of my spark plugs when all of a sudden, i needed to deal with the spark plug wires instead! one connector required an extreme amount of effort to remove. when it finally came out it was melted at the tip! in the process of trying to remove another, it cracked! the other two came out fine, but i would like to know what has happened to this engine to have ended up in this condition?

the archives seems to indicate that BOSCH spark plug wires have the tendency to crack. if this is the case, how offen should they be replaced?
