Mike, Mike, get your temperature gauge fixed! Without it, you are blind as to the temperature of the engine coolant. This is not something you should put off. Get a new temp sensor or temperature gauge module. Used ones are readily available at any decent '02 parts house.
BTW, if your '76 is a California car with the thermal reactor, the engine ran hotter because of the additional heat load of the thermal reactor. Heads were also prone to some degree to cracking. This was especially true (and expensive) for the big sixes in the 530's.
