Greetings all. I am now the proud owner of a '72 BMW 2002! I just recently purchased the car from a good friends' Dad for a measly $500. Right now the engine doesn't run, but the body is in pretty good shape.
The car has been under a car cover for the past 10 years, so there are a few small rust spots on the doors etc, but none that are throught the bodywork.....except for some small rust holes on the lower rocker panels. My friend said that the last time the car was actually run and driven was about 10 years ago, and the only reason that they didn't drive it after that was because the registration had expired and they never got to reregister it. I haven't actually tried to start the car cuz I'm sure that it at the very least needs all new fluids etc.

So, now, here's my questions to all of fellow '02 enthusiasts. Are there any major pitfalls I should look out for? I know that rust is one of the main killers of '02's and like I said, most of the usual trouble spots look like they're in great shape. The Trunk, spare tire well, and rear shock mounts look pristine.....and the only places whene there is any rust through that I can see is on the lower rocker panels. How much of a problem would that be? Also, I live in Baltimore, Maryland and am a member of the National Capital Chapter of the BMW CCA. Does anyone know of any '02 specialist in the MD/DC/VA area? What other resources are there for information on restoring 2002's(other than this great message board of course=)) Well, I am looking foreward to the plethora of information that i'm sure all of you can provide to a fellow '02 enthusiast, and to a long and happy relationship with my new toy. Thanks to you all.
