Hi Paul,

I'm wary trying to give advice to a known guru, but here goes :=).

I'm assuming you used a new gasket in-between the filter "head" and the block, right? I've also used black RTV on both sides of the gasket -- never had a leak problem. The only other thing I can think of is A) old gasket material was stuck on either surface, or B) that bolt was torqued too much causing the casing to crack. HTH.
