strange, scary noise from 1600 (archive)

there is a noise coming from toward the front passenger side wheel well, though I'm not entirely sure. It started up the other day and clicks and crackles (resembles a Van De Graf generator). It's pretty loud. Most of the time it's completely erratic, but sometimes it evens out like a baseball card in a spoke. It only happens when I'm accelerating. It seems to be worst in 3rd and disappears when I'm cruising in 4th. I have no idea what's going on. Exhaust is fine.
