: Mechanic says 76 2002 is running at 185 degrees tops. Is this ok?

A car's water temperature should be at whatever the thermostat rating is, assuming all is well. So, then:

71C = 160F
75C = 167F
80C = 176F

Now, then, my motor has a 71C thermostat, but the Autometer mechanical water temp gauge indicates about 170F at the outlet at the head.

Based on that, 185 may be a little high, but it depends upon where the temp is taken (and if he's talking water temp). Oil temps will typically be considerably higher (above 200F).
