: What do you do when you find your transmission seems to work fine, but when you go to change the oil, you find it has very little and the drain plug is full of metal chips? Is transmission failure on the horizon, or do you just fill it up with heavy oil an take your chances?

I would suggest using a magnetic drain plug and keeping it at the full mark consistently.
If it works ok then you have no real worries; it may have been abused before and not properly maintained but that doesnt mean it wont last a while longer if you take care of it now.
Use the magnetic drain plug and fill it with fresh fluid then drive it for maybe 200-500 miles and change the fluid again to clean out as much of the metal as you can.
good luck BC
