As long as the expansion tank in the trunk is still hooked up, you shouldn't be getting the gas speed in the cabin. Check the archives for more info on other possible sources of the gas smell.
Instead of putting the expansion tank in the original spot, you could get another tank bracket from a parts car and locate it between the two speakers. This would require removing the hat tray, drill two holes for the some fasteners, and bolting the whole thing together.
