I had this problem with my '73 (though I must say, I never saw any corrolation to engine temp). As Andrej said, you need to take apart the linkage and clean out the rust and lubricate. Somewhere in the linkage, I recall a bolt that slides through a collar (maybe 4 inches long). This is the main pivot point in the system. I took the thing apart and it was all full of rust. Clean this out thoroughly and lube it up with Anti-Sieze lubricant (the silver stuff) and your problem should be cured.
