Replace the cable (actually both while you're at it). There's a slim chance it's just completely out of lube/dried up, or that one of the aluminum tracks has worn through as a result of the above.

Had this problem in my last car - temporary way of getting around it without replacing the cable (it's somewhat time consuming, tracks are no big deal) is to push/pull the roof open/closed with a hand while cranking - stick your hand out the window and onto the roof to do this. Of course, this requires the left side cable to be bad - a passenger will have to do it if it's the right.

Or you can just replace the cable.
