74 tii brake and clutch (?) problem (archive)

Any advice on 2 possibly related, possibly hydraulic problems?
1. Two days ago my tii started making a kinda whirring/ticking noise, frequency responsive (pitch rises with revs) which seems to be coming from back of engine. Depress clutch, and the noise goes away. Car also seems to be a bit more difficult to get into gear, especially reverse. I did have a crunchy unintentional shift into reverse the day before I noticed the noise.
2. Removed front wheels today to change over to bottlecap alloys (325s not 2002s, alas) and found on both wheels that pads were contacting rotors in a pretty firm embrace. I could rotate hubs, but not spin them. Car seems to move normally on the road, but I wonder if the calipers are screwed up.
Waiting for Motive Prod. brake bleeder to arrive -- but before hydraulogical explorations begin, any thoughts, revelations or suggestions are welcome -- Thanks!
