What you're referring to is a rotary compressor. You can use the Bosch compressor from a 318i or M3 and modify the bracket to work on a '02. The other option is to contact ICE A/C (www.iceac.com) in San Diego. They sell a complete kit or parts which includes a bracket and Sanden compressor.

The only serious problem with the converiosn is that R12 refrigerant is being phased out. The price of R12 had gone up to 10X what were paying several years ago.

The new R-134 (I think that's the right number) is less efficent but pollutes the environment less. It may not be compatible with the Behr evaporator and receiver/dryer. Anyway you look at it, it's not going to be a simple fix.
