: Normally, head bolts should be torqued to 54-55 ft lbs. Does anyone have experience or information about using higher torque for the 2002/320i head? Like what the maximum safe value might be (assuming valves are re-adjusted, etc.). The reason for asking is that i'm using a turbocharged motor, and have recently blown a (cutting-ring) head gasket, although head was torqued to 54ft/lbs (checked the torque upon disassembly). If feasible, i'd like to torque the head down harder next time, to try and avoid another blowout.

Suggest you use ARP or Raceware studs instead of the oem bolts. These are higher strength and have larger washers to spread the load more evenly. They have their own torque specs.

Check with tuners such as Topend or Korman
