I had a similar but less severe problem. Have you woked with the ignition yet? I found major improvement with adjusting the points.

Also, Do you have the shut off solenoid on your weber? I found that mine was not operating and stuck in the "off" position. not having a replacemnt jet holder, I cut the pin off the solenoid and found immediate improvement in start up.
