Above all, if the car runs well and you're going to build a motor fairly soon, I wouldn't dump too much into this one.
: Hello all,
: Once again i'm frustrated and perplexed. The used engine I swapped in this january is running well. Just the usuall valve guide business, so I thought I'd see about fixing that and maybe put a regrind cam in at the same time. I'm planning to rebuild the original engine next year so I don't want to go nuts, but I digress. Before doing any head work I thought I'd check the compression to verify the bottom end. As you probably guessed results were less than optimal. In retrospect I'm amazed the motor runs as well as it does. My mechanic suggests a ring job in addition to the head work.
: Question: this is an old engine with 100k miles, is there a chance that the rings will not seat against the bores? Should I just keep driving and hope things hold up for another 30k miles. The numbers were 130,60,95,60 dry. 160,120,110,95 wet (pretty miserable eh). Is ther a way to fix things a bit for now without a full rebuild? I don't want to do a halfassed job but I don't have the cash for the real deal right now (3-4 grand). Any thoughts on the life expectancy of an engine with these #'s? Any thoughts on the risk/predictibility of new rings on a 100k motor? Car is my daily driver 90 miles/day.
