could it be because the valves are out of adjustment? would this make the car "run on" after I turn it off somtimes?

: I had, and still have, a similar problem. One of the things I figured out was a valve problem, that may be why it shakes at idle and then with a little pressure and more rpm it runs better.
: Try to take the head out and see if the valves close properly.
