BIG backfire on UP shift (archive)

Well as my lower message say i completed a 5 speed into an auto 02. At the same time not leaving well enough alone, I installed a MSD 6A box, MSD pro coil, new NGK plugs and mallory wires. The car has a weber 38/38, pertronics ignition and headers. With the auto trans i never experienced any backfiring. I did not change timing or carb settings when installing the msd stuff, plugs and wires. I did increase the plug gap to .040. On a high rev upshif with the 5 speed i get a BIG BANG backfire. Nothing on the down shifts. What are your thoughts; to rich carb (does smell a bit on the exhaust), incorrect timing, etc? Peter
