Broken odometer - or not? (archive)

I have a 1976 Automatic. I've had it for two weeks and have driven (according to the odometer) 2 miles. Either I have an odometer problem or I get .1 mile to the gallon. Anyway, the speedometer works great. Is this a 2002 quirk with a simple fix like oiling the cable or do I need to remove the panel and poke around?

Any advice is appreciated.
