The upper aluminum "tower mount" blocks are probably worn or cracked - but a cheap fix (so you don't miss TexasFest) is as follows:

If the 45 degree angled support rod is still attatched to the rear of the shift tower, you can add washers to shim the front of it where the "U" shaped bracket affixes to the trans. I put about 2-3mm worth of washers in there between the bracket base and the trans - and it lifted the tower up about 1/2 inch or so.

There's NO substitute for new parts - but at least you won't risk even more damage until you have the time / and money to fix her properly.

All the shifter bushings add up to about $40-50 bucks depending on how thorough you want to get.

For an additional $50-60 you can even replace the selector rod and vertical lever with the bushing pressed in!

As stated elsewhere - a rebuilt shifter will make a MAGICAL difference in the way the car feels!
