Poor man's way to check a water pump (archive)

With the engine cool, start the car without the cap on. wait until the thermostat opens up, i.e. the temperature gauge jumps dramatically. then watch the coolant while gently reving the engine from inside the engine compartment. If it starts to circulate, move around somewhat, your water pump is probably okay. Dont hold me to this, as I havent done it in a while, but that is the way i always checked. You have to rev the engine a little though or it wont really circulate when doing this.
