I have a feeling that your problem is coincidental to the gas-in-oil event. Before I rebuilt the motor in my '74, the exact symptom you describe appeared: one day the oil light began to flash at idle, but revving it up a bit would turn it off. Over a period of a few weeks the problem got a bit worse, so that the occasional flash at idle turned into a bright glow. Thicker oil or STP helped for a while, but really this was a symptom that the bearings had worn to the point that the oil pressure was below switch level at idle. I drove the car that way for well over a year, because my commute did not require much stop-and-go, and because I was a student with no choice in the matter. Of course, I kept it to under 4000rpm. When I finally broke the motor down, the crank was fine but the bearings were sloppy. I opted not to regrind the crank, just put in some fresh bearings. I've driven it 15000 miles since then, no problems.

Another indicator that this is the problem is a persistent bearing knock at low revs.

: Any cheap, free, easy suggestions. (sorry so long of a Q)
