While working with and talking to the guys at H&R (who use Bilstein guts on their coil-overs), we found that the HD's and the Sports were the very same shock, only different lengths for different springs. Given the fact that many have used both and found them to "feel" different, including us (meaning VWvortex), we were skeptical as well.

What we did learn was that even with the same springs on both types of shocks, because they were different lengths, they felt like they were behaving differently. In other words, a shorter shock with a longer spring will have more preload built into it than the correct length spring and shock combo. I don't think it is a big deal either way. Just thought I'd pass on some information I have gathered along the way.
