1. My engine wiggles around a bit on starting too...not sure if this is completely typical, but with 20-50 in it, it's not surprising. Perhaps others will know more about this.
2. After 27 years, you can pretty much bet steering bushings are cracked and worn. Just getting in there and tightening up a few things made my car go from 2.5-3 inches of play to about a half inch now. I plan to replace them all at some point. Also check and see if the play comes mostly from the bushings, or if there's some play in the steering box. This is not uncommon at this point either.
3. Just lubing up the bushing behind the pedal will probably help, but I replaced the pedal and bushing, and things are much much better. It's kind of a funny design how the pedal pivots on the floor, but it shouldn't be that stiff.
