: well ive posted w\questions here before about what to look for when buying a 2002 and i have to say thanks to all that helped. so finally after looking at e30's
: for the longest time have made a purchase of a 1973 2002! its very rough but has no structural rust and runs very strong.but of course,i do have even more questions to ask!ive never driven any other 2002's before so i have no idea if mine is messed up or if its just that way.
: first: when i crank the car the motor swings back and forth about five inches left or right from center. ive checked the motor mounts and they seem fine but the placement is odd. so i was wondering if this is typical because of a possible design flaw?i noticed that the drivers side was up high and the passenger side mount was way down low, seems like it would cause such generous movement of drivetrain. any thoughts?
: second:the steering is super sloppy!i was very disappointed when i was drive it. it was almost as if it had the power steering of my old plymouth valiant
: yuck.so.. is this common? bushings perhaps? bad rack? normal?
: third: extreamly stiff throttle pedal. ive noticed this on e30's that i have drive and even on a new M3. but man!this was stiff. again is this normal is there a quick fix or do i just have to get used to it?
: im very happy with my purchase even with all these thins which i consider to be very minor and always changeable.

: so anyway thanks for everything and also when is the texas '02 fest? i live close to austin and would love to show off my new toy!

Make sure the timing is correct and the carb is adjusted properly--in otherwords, do a complete tune-up.

The slop in the steering is probably due to a worn steering box. There is a screw mechanism on top of the box (under the carburetor/intake--look down and you'll see it). Don't turn it too much and you should get a manual ASAP.

The throttle is stiff because it probably needs to be cleaned and lubed. Get a vacuum cleaner and clean all the gunk and dirt out of the pedal box and lube everything. Then drive it for a while and lube again. It should loosen up.

You will have to decide whether or not you need new suspension components. I highly recommend getting new ball joints if it doesn't have them. A friend's car broke one recently and ruined completely a wheel, tire, fender and some miscellaneous components. Right after he had the car painted.

Suggestions are to check the archives, get a manual or two, go to the Houston site and link to the Australian site and print out their list of things to do to an 02 about 180 items, also check out Bimmers.com 02 section.

Good luck.

Mike
