Brown paint on my Kugelfisher, what does it mean? (archive)

This is something that hasn't really ever bothered me before, but for some reason I began thinking about it recently. My Kugelfisher has a light brown painted dot about the size of a dime on the top, machined surface. Does anyone have an idea of its meaning?

Does it mean my pump been rebuilt/repaired at some time?

Is it a factory mark to signify the fuel curve (i.e. distinguish it from a '74 or a turbo)?

Was one of the POs painting his garage with the tii nearby and the hood open, and a drop of paint just happened to fall on the injection pump?

I'm interested to know.
