hey all,

picked up an alternator off a 318i yesterday(don't know what year model). it's 80 amps internally regulated and will bolt right in with minor modifications. get everything including the ratchet type lower bracket which has the right offset. the only mod to do is either shorten the metal bushing to size(to fit the upper alternator bracket) or in my case, i had a 528i alternator laying around with the correct size bushing and just installed that on the 318 alternator. you can also transfer the bushing out of the stock alternator to it. the stock belt will be a little short so i had to slip it over all the pulleys then installed the alternator on its brackets...or better yet, just get a longer belt. all the pulleys are even aligned better than when i had the stock alternator. red wire goes to the output...you'll need to put a bigger ring terminal. the blue wire(D+) goes on the smaller stud...you'll also need to put a ring terminal on it. disconnect the plug off the external regulator. i've always wanted to do this because i run an electric fuel pump and fan. and lastly, while you're taking a break while pulling that alternator out, grab the 318 rearview mirror too. fits perfect on the 02 stalk, not too big (sunvisors will clear it)but provides a much better view. ya'll have a nice weekend.
