OK - even if he charges you $300.00 for the parts - (we sell 'em for $150-170) that means that it will take him 10 billed hours to install the thing????
Any mechanic worth his "Snap Ons" should be able to replace a clutch in under 5 hours. Hell! I did mine on my damn BACK in 4!
Bring the car to me and I'll install it for $300.00 plus $169 for the clutch kit parts!
(just kiddong - but if I had time I really would though!)
As for "do it yourself" jobs - I had someone hold my hand the first time - and after one practice run, it's pretty easy - as long as you don't force or break anything.
I don't know if this is in the archives - but maybe I can write a tech article this afternoon (If I have time today - I'll do it!)
Bottom Line:
Take the car to a different mechanic if you're nervous about tackling it yourself!
All the Best!
