Paul,

I just bought a 76 02 4speed. The transmission is original. The previous owner replaced the clutch a year ago but not the master slave. I am having some related problems and wanted to get your advice.
If I allow the car to stop in neutral, I am unable to place into first gear. I have three options:
1. Turn off the engine, get the car in gear, and restart.
2. If on an incline, let it roll a bit. I can get it into first but I have to force it a little.
3. Put in reverse slowly and grind the spinning to a halt. Then it is as normal to get into first.
None of the options are great. They'll lead to more serious trans problems and others in the future. Other than this the transmission is great. I'd like to keep the car for a while. Do I need a new clutch? New transmission? Those of you who have been there, what would you do?

Thanks in advance.
