In a worst case scenario - carbs with incorrect float settings, etc...can run so rich as to rinse all the lubricating oil from the cylinder walls - hence loss of compression.
It did happen to a friend of mine after bolting on 45's to an older motor - without correct tuning.

Sorry - I didn't want to put the fear of god in you - but it is a possibility.
