Check out this site: www.bimmers.com. It has excellent insight for those who are new to '02s, and there is also a "For Sale" section which can give you an idea of how much you might spend on a decent '02. Your idea of "decent" may differ from mine, but I think a good, relatively rust-free, mechanically sound car can be had for about $2.5-3K. An essential book to have is Mike Macartney's "BMW '02 Restoration Guide" which can be found at larger bookstores, like Barnes & Noble, or check their website. Also good to have is "The BMW 2002: A Comprehensive Guide to the Classic Sporting Saloon" by James Taylor and Mike Macartney and "The BMW 02 Series: The Cult Car" by Mobile Tradition. The latter is available from the dealer. The "Search" function on this board is an excellent tool to find out whatever you may have questions about. Good luck!
